This book is a great reminder of what Christmas was and should be and, maybe, a guidebook on how to get back there. And while the book is certainly about Christmas, it really speaks to a mind set that we should have all year long. The ideas are presented in a clear and thoughtful manner with appropriate examples, and with none of the "holier-than-thou" attitude that some folks in the green movement have adopted. Mr. Owen has a good sense of humor and it is obvious he enjoys writing about a subject that is important to him. We learn through some of the anecdotes that he uses to illustrate his ideas that he learned early on what Christmas should be about (I'm thinking about the "Christmas branch" as I write this).

I suspect that there are many of us older folks who remember past Christmas seasons with some nostalgia and a degree of sadness as we observe the current concept of Christmas we see all around us this time of year. For those folks, take heart! Mr. Owen's observations and suggestions show how we can get back there. And, as he points out, we don't have to do it all at once. We can start with some "baby steps" and do more each year. For the younger crowd, this is a great idea book on ways to create a meaningful Christmas experience for you and your children.

One final thought - The writing and editing are first rate, not something you always see in self-published books, especially from a newcomer. Mr. Owen's easy conversational style and his sharing of family stories makes for an easy and enjoyable read. He is really a story-teller that writes.

I love the tips in How to Have a Green Christmas because I believe that Christmas is not about consumption and hoarding stuff. My favorite ideas from the book are Kiva gift cards (I gifted two) and the Christmas branch.
Although I try to do a lot of these tips already, the book is easy to read, well written, and a great primer for people interested in going or "trying" green tips. I think the author did a great job. This is a quick, clear, and helpful read!

It has accessible, money-saving tips, creative ideas and fun activities to get the whole family involved. Sometimes, the true meaning of Christmas gets lost in all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. This book is full of helpful tips that can be put into practice to not only make your holiday more environmentally friendly but to serve as reminders of what the season is really all about.

I got this book yesterday and was able to read the entire thing in just two short evenings. The author had some fun ideas to share. I especially liked the game idea that he shared about getting kids to help cut down on utility expenses. His thoughts have got me interested in learning more about composting with worms too. I'm glad I spent the time to read this book.
