I greatly appreciate the thorough research author Andy Homan did in preparation of writing Life in the Slipstream. This book is an incredible portrait of one of America's greatest athletes and it's chock-full of sports Americana (although the history contained within the book isn't strictly limited to cycling).

In a day and age where we're ruled by political correctness and rush to litigation over the smallest of scratches or bruising of egos, this book is a breath of fresh air. Bobby Walthour, Sr. and his fellow riders "got it." They lived passionately and understood that there are are no guarantees in life. They were gladiators who put it all on the line each time they raced, testing the limits of their bodies, minds, and the technology that was available.

Through passion, courage, and perseverance, Walthour became an American pioneer. I hope Life in the Slipstream serves to promote Walthour and his extraordinary legacy, as well as to rekindle the passion we Americans once had for pursuing greatness.

Once I picked this up and started reading I couldn't put it down. It is a well researched, well written and thoroughly enjoyable read of a little known chapter of early professional bicycle racing. Very vivid images are portrayed of drafting behind motorcycles at speeds over 50 M.P.H., races that go on 24 hours non-stop for six straight days, and all done with a cast of colorful characters. I highly recommend this for not just bicycle enthusiast but anyone that likes a great story.

A must read for people who love the bike racing culture. The US was big time at the turn of the century. Bobby was phenomenal. You will not believe the speeds and I really mean that.
perhaps in the fine print but the pictures in the HB book are great - dissapointing they are not in the kindle edition
I just started to glimpse at this book and it is very interesting what Bobby Walthour Sr. does when racing behind motorbikes at fast speeds.

In cycling, the slipstream is the protective draft. Yet -- as Andrew Homan tells in his engaging biography of Bobby Walthour Sr. -- life in the slipstream during America's golden age of track racing was anything but protective. Walthour was one of the biggest star's in the daring sport of velodrome racing of a century ago. And Walthour's speciality was ultra-dangerous motor-paced racing.

Homan's book is a significant contribution to American cycling history. It's well researched with many fine details of life in races in New York's Madison Square Garden and across Europe. He tells of Walthour pedaling the frantic last mile of one race in 1 minute, 7 seconds -- nearly 55 mph. He tells readers of the big money made by top racers. Walthour made $20,000 ($503,000 today) when the average American averaged $1,000 ($25,200) and baseball great made $4,200 ($106,000). Homan also reveals details of Walthour's training program and diet during the famed six-day races -- potatoes, corn, rice, bacon, eggs, steak and -- of course, this is cycling -- coffee. The pages of "Life in the Slipstream" also graphically reveal the many high-speed crashes from this early age of bicycle racing. Exploding gas tanks on pacing motorcycles. Bursting tires at 45 mph. Splinters from velodromes stabbing into flesh. Deaths were common. He also tells of the long-term toll such a difficult sport takes on the human body and mind.

A more narrative approach would have been interesting here, though "Life in the Slipstream" stands solid as an outstanding cycling book. The best parts of Homan's work are when he provides some of his own analysis. He ponders what U.S. cycling could have been if Walthour had switched to road cycling as the Tour de France was in its early days and road cycling was on its way to becoming the most popular form of cycling. Perhaps America would have been been a bigger player decades before 7-Eleven and LeMond came along. Instead, Walhour and his era faded into obscurity. Homan has done an admirable job of bringing it back to life, and that's a valuable thing for students of U.S. cycling history.
