The Recruit A Highland Guard Novel Monica McCarty 9780345528414 Books
A BIT DISAPPONTING!!We have been reading about the character Kenneth Sutherland for awhile now, The brother to William Sutherland Earl of Sutherland. Kenneth is the heir and he and his brother had to submit to Robert the Bruce. There loyalties had been with King Edward II of England. Kenneth now wants to become one of Bruce's Highland Guard. A phantom army created by Bruce and trained. Each HG has a specialized skill and Kenneth is being recruited and trained. He is sent on a mission back to England to spy on King Edward. While there he runs into the Mary Mar. Kenneth and Mary had a brief affair while she was on a mission in Scotland for King Edward. Mary is being held a prisoner along with her son David the young Earl of Atholl. Mary's husband John Strathbogie Earl of Atholl has been captured by King Edward and he has been put to death for treason against England. King Edward has Mary's son David taken away from her when he was just 6 months old. Now 13 years later Edward still has Mary under is control.
There are a few surprises in the story, even though I thought this was the way the story would go. Ms. McCarty trick me with her superb writing skill. Then the story reveals what I first thought was true.
The reason for 3 stars and the disappointment centers around Mary of Mar's character. She is written very similar to Isabella MacDuff from bk6 Viper. The two characters are much older heroines who have been married and separated from there children. Late twenty's are old for a lead character during this period of history. I like a younger more innocent heroine. Now on to Kenneth the way he is written It didn't seem like he was ready to become a member of the Highland Guard. He never listen to what he was told by his leaders in the Guard and lacks self control. However he does overcome these flaws by the end of the story. There is also, to many easily explained misunderstandings between the couple. Too much Angst making The Recruit less sensuous and less romantic then the other HG stories!!

The Recruit A Highland Guard Novel Monica McCarty 9780345528414 Books Reviews
Once again, Monica McCarty has woven the characters of her novel intricately into the fabric of the actual historical individuals of the time. The story of Kenneth Sutherland's desire to join the Highland Guard was known in the latter chapters of The Saint. However, his induction into the Highland Guard nearly cost him the love of his life. Mary of Mar, whose first husband, the Earl of Atholl was arrested, tried & hanged for treason was carefully avoiding another relationship, until she met Kenneth. Thankfully, Mary was able to dig deeply into her own past and find forgiveness for the one man on whom she could depend and be happy. I also love the interaction between Kenneth and his sister Mary's husband, Magnus MacKay, also a member of the Highland Guard. Their relationship bordered on tenuous, but as Mary said late in the book, "you two act just like brothers." This series of novels have captured my interest and have instilled a deep desire to read more, but even more I would love to visit the rugged Scottish Highlands and visit the country where so many died in an effort to be free.
I had found Kenneth to be a bit brash, indisciplined, over aggressive and a general hothead in Saint's story. But I wanted to see how he overcame his denouement, his volatile temper. The book turned out better than expected, considering I had zero expectations. I could feel for Kenneth when he felt used, like a stud. I could understand his desire to win, because he was fed up of being second best at everything. I could feel his frustration and feeling of failure when his mission was going all wrong. But in order to put him on par with the rest of the guard, McCarty puffed up his qualities a bit, and it showed. Throughout the series, the good looks of Arrow have been legendary, and suddenly Kenneth is almost as good looking as him. He even defeats Arrow's brother in archery, one of the best archers in Scotland. He wins every weapon event at the games, something no one has ever done. He nearly bests Saint at wrestling, who has undergone rigorous training and has years of extreme fighting behind him. Really, now? And another thing what happened to the rest of the recruits who were not good enough? They must've seen all the members of the Guard. Is secrecy no longer important? And why was the one who lasted one day less then Kenneth in Perdition not accepted? By those standards, none but Tor n Lachlan would qualify. These issues niggled at me, and for the first time I found myself taking a star off of McCarty's writing. Mary was quite believable at first. Bitter and heartbroken, pining for her son and hiding so as not to draw attention to herself. But after the 'episode' with Kenneth, she suddenly throws off her hideous clothes, because now she wants to get married. It's a bit disconcerting that she's no longer afraid to catch Edward's eye all of a sudden. But not to any man who seems interested in her, apparently. Because she is opposed to all three of her suitors. Her caution with Kenneth initially was understandable, as was his with hers. But it kind of dragged. And it was a bit incongruous that nobody realized she was pregnant even when she was nearing eight months! All in all, this book is a bit disconnected from the rest. It's not bad, but it's not in the same league as the stories of the rest of the Guard before this. You don't feel for Kenneth as deeply as you felt for Erik, Arthur, Lachlan or even Tor or McKay. Mary is ok, not bad, but not scintillating either. Considering how intense this series has been so far, this book is like comic relief. Not bad, but not up to McCarty 's standards.
